US Engages Kenya After Court Suspends Proposed Ebola Isolation Facility

(MENAFN) The United States has expressed confidence that issues surrounding a planned Ebola isolation center in Kenya can be addressed, following a court decision that temporarily blocked the project.

In a statement issued Saturday, the office of a senior US official responsible for foreign assistance and humanitarian affairs said, “We are aware of the court action filed in Kenya against the Ebola isolation facility. We are in touch with Kenyan authorities and are optimistic we can resolve objections.”

The remarks represent Washington’s first public reaction since Kenya’s High Court ordered a temporary halt to the construction or operation of the proposed center while a constitutional case is being reviewed.

The suspension was ordered on Friday by a Kenyan judge after a civil rights organization filed a petition questioning the project’s legality and arguing that it raises constitutional and public-interest issues that warrant judicial examination, according to reports.

The planned facility has sparked widespread discussion across Kenya amid reports suggesting it may be linked to US contingency measures for American citizens who could be exposed to Ebola during the current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
